A Warm Welcome To Our Daisy Garland Spring Green Shoots Project 🌱

This project exists because of funds and seeds donated by our Daisy Garland fundraisers and supporters. We are enormously grateful to each and every one of you.  Thank you!  Without your help this brilliant project would cease to exist.

March 2026

Spring has well and truly sprung here at Daisy Garland HQ!  Jean, our Family Support Assistant, has been a busy bee filling our spring grow boxes with tiny tools, carefully selected seeds, and lots of love.  These little boxes of joy will soon be on their way to the 67 children taking part in our 2026 Green Shoots project 🌱  Each box will be opened with much excitement by our enthusiastic gardeners who we know will be keen to roll up their sleeves and get the growing season underway!  Team Daisy will be growing alongside you too and we can't wait to get our little seeds in the ground!   As the weeks go by we'll be sure to post growing hints and tips in order for you to get the best possible results from your gardens, patio pots and window boxes.   There's lots of fun ahead!   Look out for your grow box with our distinctive Daisy Garland tape.... it's full of magic!

WALLFLOWERS

Wallflowers have a special place in my heart. When I catch that sweet, almost orangey, scent I am transported back to sitting on a front door step in my Nan and Granddad's garden - nostalgic memories of days gone by.  Wallflowers are biennials, which means that you sow the seeds in May, they do most of their growing between May and November, they hunker down and don't do much over the winter and then, when the weather warms up in the spring, they burst into flower.  Click HERE for Wallflower growing tips.

WILD FLOWER SEEDS AND SEED BALLS

“Fantastic flowers 🌱” Charles

So good to see some blue sky this week and great to get out for a Mindful walk with Flossie this morning.  Noticing along the way: a tiny tucked away bug hotel (pic 2), primroses, ladybirds, bluebells... and....

... a little clump of violets by the roadside, which made me think of the quote (below) by Dr Edward A Wilson.

A happy life is not built up of tours abroad and pleasant holidays, but of little clumps of violets noticed by the roadside.  Dr Edward A Wilson.

Looking forward to sowing my Green Shoots seeds this weekend and I hope you are too! 🌱🌱🌱

Take care and happy Easter everyone! πŸ₯

Did You Know?  The word April means 'to open' in Latin, a reference to the start of spring.

APRIL

Spotted lots of spring flowers whilst walking Flossie this morning and had a quick forage along the way for some hedgerow greenery to take home and turn into a little Easter tree...

If you're out and about over the Easter, see how many of the spring flowers below you can spot.

"Happy Easter! Here is our tree, with some lovely wooden ornaments, wool tufts, and little wooden eggs decorated by me and the children.  Also in shot are the flowers Poppy was given by her epilepsy nurse - a well done present for completing her Daisy Garland sponsored bike ride! πŸ’œπŸŒΈπŸŒΌ "  Hannah

"Green Shoots 🌱 - seeding.  Anna's indoor garden upgraded and started new season, with one special inhabitant.  Wish us luck."  Honza

"Easter Sunday gardening session, we planted beans you sent us last year, she did try to eat them but eventually popped them into the compost πŸ«£πŸ˜‚"  Claire

"Thank you for our green shoots box πŸ₯° so exciting!! Our teeny tiny dafs from the autumn are looking lovely and we made the most of the sunshine yesterday and George planted the snapdragon seeds in between them xx"  Ella

Trying to find small ways of building more Mindfulness moments into my daily routine.  Wonderful to see green leaves and tiny chestnut flowers on my walk into work this morning.    It's surprising what you see when you take the time to look up as opposed to looking straight ahead!

"Hello Greenshoots! πŸ’š  It's been full on gardening Easter holiday up here.  The radishes are popping up nicely. Toms have been just potted up using lovely mini tools. While Isabelle's dad was busy up in the allotment planting fruit trees, sifting compost and cutting grass.  There is so much more to do in coming weekends. Have a good growing and eating season everybody! πŸ₯¦πŸ«›πŸ…πŸ“πŸ§„πŸŒΆοΈ  P. S. We also had our very first crop of the season- forced rhubarb. It was a very nice rhubarb crumble πŸ˜‹" Erika

"Green Shoots 2026 🌱 first harvest.  Just after one week from seeding, Anna harvested first batch of cress and had it for her snack with feta cheese."  Honza

"So much was planted this morning. Amy’s sister is in nursery so we used her inset day for mummy daughter garden time. Amy has quite strong mood swings but today really relaxed and enjoyed planting. Last years chives have come back a treat too. Also pics of Ella doing some planting last week. Thank you so much again everyone at Daisy Garland xxx"  Ceri-ann

11 April

Beautiful birthday buds blooming on our 'Tree of Hope' for Epilepsy.  Pictures taken on what would have been Daisy's 28th birthday.

"We love to see the daffodils from our Green Shoots Grow Box a couple of years ago are still going strong."  Lorraine

There are lots of buds coming up in the alliums we planted in the autumn. I will try and get a picture tomorrow for you. Spring seed sowing has been delayed because of the lengthy hospital stay. It will be one of the first things we do when we get him back home xxxx  Rosalind

"Photos of our daffodils, and the teeny tiny alium shoots!"  Hannah

April 17th

The second week in April and everything in the garden's waking up! Sara x

Alliums from last autumn's Green Shoots grow box...

First Gertrude Jekyll rosebud of the season πŸ’œ...

Peony bud...

Lilac flowers emerging...  (There really is nothing like the scent of lilac! πŸ’œ) ...

Rosemary, soon to be buzzing with bees and other little pollinators!🐝🐝🐝 πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹ ...

Poppy bud (with the cutest little whiskers!)...

Can't remember the name of this stunning tulip, but it has the most exquisite petals and fruity scent...

Last November we rescued and planted this little pot-bound Christmas Tree.  It had lost lots of its pine needles and was looking very sorry for itself.  But lo and behold, since being planted in the ground it seems to be having a  second wind!  Look out for some twinkly pics in December!

A little box of joy!

Time to settle down with a Daisy mug of tea for some serious seed sorting!

In the absence of rain, today's a good day to get sowing!  I must admit a few of the seeds sown were vintage seeds, dating back to 2019. So it will be interesting to see what does and doesn't come up!  I'll be sure to keep you posted!    Here's what I've sown so far:

The Borlotti beans in the little grey pot on the left (a 'souvenir' from the stunning veg garden at Sharpham House in Devon, where we held last year's Time4Me Retreat).  I'm very excited at the thought of planting a little piece of Sharpham magic on our allotment this year.  If you're one of the 16 lucky mums who attended this event, you'll know just what I mean by Sharpham magic ✨    PS  the tin of pear halves is a make-shift plant pot (just in case you were wondering!)

Into the compost my magic beans go!

Flossie's always on hand to help!

Tiny little garlic chive seeds - some added to pots, the rest of the seeds will be sown later in the salad patch on our allotment plot...

These little plastic fruit cartons come in handy at this time of year...

It's a great way to recycle these plastic containers, using them as mini cloches, keeping the air around the plant pot at at even temperature to encourage early sprouting...

Four little pots of Crown Prince Squash seeds waiting to germinate on our sunny kitchen windowsill.  These seeds were collected from the belly of one of the large Crown Prince Squashes we grew on the allotment last year. All 67 of this year's Green Shoots growers received some of these seeds and it's lovely to think we're all going to be growing them together, comparing notes and pics along the way.  Good luck everyone!  I hope your little seeds sprout!   The grey/green squash in the pic is what these little seeds will produce later in the year 🀞

Some exciting news to share from Maddie's mum, Kayleigh... 🌱🌱🌱

"Maddies Crown Prince Squashes are coming along a treat!  3 out of 4 isn't bad!"  Kayleigh

"We were very excited to find this green shoot this morning. It's one of Sara's squash seeds 😍"  Sarah

"We've had some time in the garden planting some veg. We have potatoes, carrots, brussels sprouts, strawberries, onions and the Crown Prince squash is peeking out.  We also have celery and tomato seeds in and waiting for those highly anticipated green shoots 🌱 had a little visit from a ladybird that Kirstie named Robert who landed on my shoulder."  Gail

"I took a few photos when we were watering last night - I love the mini daffodils, I keep thinking they're past it but then we get more!
Poppy was saying goodnight to her little shoots, so cute..  I'm putting a few sensory friendly plants in the long troughs, so the kids have a little area for messy/sensory play if they want. Also trying to encourage my 15yo to get interested in the garden!"   Hannah

"Georgia opening her green shoots box πŸ₯°   She was very happy with her own gardening tools! We are yet to start planting as the weather has been awful here but we are hoping to get into the garden next week. We will keep you updated with how we are doing 😊 xx"  Sarah

"Here are James, Daisy, George and Stella Planting the seeds! XXXX "  Marguerite

"So, I'm incredibly late to the garden this year.  Finally got some time to get outside today.   Have put some seeds in the greenhouse in the hope that as it's been so late to dry this far north, it's not too late to start things off.   My fig tree now has buds of fruit on so moving it into a better pot doesn't seem to have done it any harm (yey!).  The bulbs you sent last year are happily poking through and as you can see i have some flowers 🌺🌼🌺

The overly ambitious planter has a few things in there that are basically self- seeded from last year, but have added a few more seeds to the mix today as well as those in the green house, in the hopes that at least some of them succeed 🀞 Taking a break for now as I want some tea, but am feeling rather accomplished β˜•οΈ  You forget just how much you enjoy being outside in early spring.   My next step will be to plant some potatoes I think...  I bought some anya potato sets to try πŸ₯”πŸ₯”πŸ₯”   But that's a tomorrow job x"  Kay

Kay, who in April 2024 tragically lost her Son, Spud, to epilepsy and has written a wonderful gardening blog for The Daisy Garland, which you can read  HERE.

"Tia has planted some more seeds this afternoon in the sunshine 🌞 🌱"  Chloe

All the bulbs are starting to bloom now too! (Amazing as Izzie literally threw some into the pots..isn’t nature amazing!). Annie

"A quick Green Shoots update 🌱 - we moved some of our tomato and cucamelon seedlings into bigger pots, and round at Nanna's house, the radish is a little out of control and needs thinning out! πŸ™ˆ " Hannah.

"A busy but lovely day in the garden at the weekend!  Amy started by helping dig out our homemade compost (and was delighted when she spotted any worms! πŸ˜†). Then she planted courgette, runner bean and Garland Crown Prince Squash seeds. We also planted some baby snap dragon seeds and some sweet pea plug plants. She's now waiting impatiently for those green shoots to appear!"  Julie

"Eve having lots of fun sowing her Green Shoots Seeds 🌱"  Jenny

"The Devon hedgerows are filled with wild garlic.  Couldn't resist picking a little bunch this morning whilst out with Flossie to turn into wild garlic butter.  I made sure to pick leaves from higher up in the hedgerow....  Wild garlic butter is more flavoursome than regular garlic and is  delicious smothered on keto-friendly bread. or stirred into vegetables."  Sara

"Thank you so much for our green shoot box , georgia had so much fun planting everything with the help of her big brother πŸ₯°πŸ’š πŸͺ΄ 🌱 🌿"  Luanne

"Our Crown Prince Squashes are now too big for the house, so have been moved out to the greenhouse. Roots still not strong enough for outdoor planting."  Charles

If you planted Daisy Garland alliums last year, please don't give up on seeing those Green Shoots just yet 🌱  Every little bulb is individual and some allium bulbs nudge their noses through the soil later than others.  Just keep checking the pots/area where you planted them (if you can remember where you planted them!) and you should see those long awaited Green Shoots very soon! πŸ§… 🌱 πŸ₯€  Sara x

PS  excited to see some of the seeds sprouting I planted a week ago...

"We have some little green shoots growing 🌱"  Chloe and Tia

"We have some too... Novice gardener at best, really enjoyed planting them for Grayson with my eldest Reuben can't wait to see them flower 🌸 πŸ’œ"  Lee

"We have some cucumber peas and tomatoes starting to sprout  Wonder how long till the squirrels come and steal them again? πŸ˜‚ they are starting to annoy me now we did have some onions and carrots that had sprouted but they have stolen them xx"  Chloe

"Lots of beautiful, bright, alliums in flower right now and a lot of buds waiting to burst forth. Delayed Spring seed sowing taking place later this week. Thank you xxxx"  Rosalind

"Ours have suddenly all opened! Love the alliums and so do the 🐝! xx"  Annie

"Coffee and biscuits with my gardening!  Poppy got home in time to label the cucamelon, then she wanted to go for a ride in the wagon! We'll have to move the plants again soon, as I'm struggling to find room indoors for them to have a pot each, but they're sharing for now. I need some bigger pots for my spider plants now too 🌱🌿"  Hannah

"Here are George's Beans, Radishes, Cucumbers, Beetroots and Carrots.  We will be separating them soon to give them plenty of space."  Marguerite

"Green shoots! 🌿  We had some radishes and they were as crunchy as they can get But because of drought they began to bolt. We might sow another batch.  Up in allotment we have a lovely crop of strawberries and it looks like there will be plenty of gooseberries to make some Gooseberry fool.  We love watching bees collecting nectar 🐝 🌸. It feels as if time stops. Very meditative."  Erika and Isabelle

"Still more work to do but it's coming along.  Back garden has 3 yellow tubs of potatoes then we have some onions, Brussels sprouts; sugar snap peas have been planted but no shoots yet and the same with the chives. We also have some strawberries, carrots and tomatoes."  Gail
