Spring 2025 A Big Welcome To Our Daisy Garland Spring Green Shoots Project π± This project has been made possible through funds raised and donated by our Daisy Garland fundraisers and supporters. We are enormously grateful to each and every one of them. March What an exciting time of year! When I catch that sweet, almost orangey, scent I am transported back to sitting on a front door step in my Nan and Granddad's garden - nostalgic memories of days gone by. Wallflowers are biennials, which means that you sow the seeds in May, they do most of their growing between May and November, they hunker down and don't do much over the winter and then, when the weather warms up in the spring, they burst into flower. Wild Flower Seeds and Seed Balls Create a flowering meadow or just a natural patch in a window box or flower garden to encourage bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Find out how to do this HERE And to discover how to make your own Seed Balls, click HERE Happy Sowing Everyone! Fascinating Sunflower Facts π» π» The entirety of a sunflower is edible. Their leaves, stalks, and roots can all be used as food, and were grown in North America before other crops like corn became common. They were milled to create flour, and their seeds roasted and eaten. π» Young sunflowers follow the sun all day, and then reset their position at night to be ready for sunrise. Once fully grown, they stay facing east to attract bees and other pollinators. π» On average, sunflowers grow to be between 6 to 10 feet, but they can grow much taller. The tallest sunflower ever recorded was 30 feet. π» Sunflowers can absorb toxins, including toxic metals and radiation. Following the nuclear disasters of Chernobyl and Fukushima, scientists planted millions of sunflowers to help those areas recover. They are remarkable plants! I warned Isabelle it wasn't food this time and she was very happy!" Sarah "We began our sowing season with tomatoes . I did it this way last year and it worked really well. You just need make sure the tissue paper does not dry out and keep them some where warm. The fresh seeds (from the last season) can germinate within a day or two. As soon as I will see a teeny tiny little tails I will put a single seed in to a separate roll in the tray and sprinkle some compost on top. Non germinated seeds can be discarded. It can be very exiting for little growers to germinate this way peas and beans. Peas and beans would need a thicker level of wet tissue and can stay open Happy spring everybody! " Erika "Olivia was so keen to start her green shoots that she opened them and immediately planted them now to get her brother in the photos when they move into the garden! In the meantime this is her with her Uncle Jarrod modelling the t-shirt too! Thanks again team DG xx" Cath. Think this is going to be a lovely project for Emyr & Grandad. Thank you all ever so much xxx " Melanie The full moon that appears during March is also known as the 'Worm Moon', named after the earthworms that re-emerge at the beginning of spring when the ground starts to thaw. "Sunny Saturday 16th March, Time to carefully place a few tiny tomato seeds onto the surface of chocolate brown compost. Recently used tin cans, washed and rinsed make great starter plant pots (see below). I just need to be mindful when it comes to watering, as there's no hole in the bottom for any excess water to escape... I covered the seeds with a sprinkling of compost, just enough to hide them, before giving them a good spray to settle the seeds into their new home. The plant labels are a good reminder what's been planted and when... I popped a plastic bag over each tin to help encourage germination and placed two of the tins in our little plastic greenhouse. The other tin's coming to the office with me in the morning to sit on our sunny kitchen windowsill. Tomato sandwiches here we come! π ... Next up: broad beans, sunflowers and marigolds... Not wanting to waste a second of this gorgeous weather, I pulled on my gardening boots, and set off to the allotment to sow some salad veg straight into the ground... It's incredible to think each little corky seed will turn into a beautiful beetroot with a mass of edible glossy green leaves. Following the instructions on the back of the seed packet, I dropped 20 well-spaced seeds into the freshly raked soil. There are still lenty more seeds in the packet but I didn't want to sow them all at once. I love beetroot, but if they all arrive at the same time it can be a bit overwhelming! So I"ll wait a few weeks between new sowings (succession sowing). Planting this way means homegrown beetroot all summer long. Again, it's hard to believe that each dot of a seed will grow into a crisp, leggy, spring onion, (or chipple as we fondly called them growing up). Again, I didn't sow the whole packet, saving some of the seeds to sow later... Finally, the Radish. 25 seeds sown, spacing each seed well so they have plenty of room to grow. It's nothing short of a miracle knowing these tiny hard seeds will turn into rosy radishes in the space of 6-8 weeks. The magic of nature β¨π±β¨ 3 rows of seeds sown π±π±π± What satisfaction! Now for the watering-in. Rex, where are you?! ... It's so exciting to get the growing season underway! π± Next stop: home for a cup of tea βοΈ Happy sowing everyone! " SARA X I’m enjoying composting at the moment! George and I emptied our bin last week and there was some lovely compost in there, so I’m starting again. I need to buy a second bin for when the first ones full as I stopped putting anything in for a few months. Now back to putting in all fruit and veg peel, egg shells and garden waste. I also put the chicken bedding in there when I clean them out so hoping it will be rocket fuel for the plants. Ella Click HERE to learn about the joys of composting! We compost everything foodwise - brown bin goes to council for their anaerobic digester (includes meat & cooked foods), raw salad & veg goes to our home compost bins x Jo "Anna's Green Shoots part two: Seeding. Justine "Gethin did some planting with his carers this afternoon he’s very excited about the beans xxx" Helen "Ivy-Rose and her younger siblings Arlo and Ida-Rose planted their seeds this afternoon. A lovely little sibling activity that they could all get involved with and are so excited to see them grow. They weren’t happy with me that their daisy garland t shirts were in the wash as they’ve worn them a lot (Excuse the mess of the garden it’s currently under maintenance)" Carla "Faith's green shoots bulbs she planted in her bee flower tub looking super." I'm sharing Mother's day with Lily as she's 12 today " Vanessa "We FINALLY have flowers Our sun flowers are starting to shoot " Chloe APRIL "Everything is coming through nicely. I’m happy with my tomatoes, they are looking really strong and healthy. I am trying a new variety this year called Bauna, it’s an improved version of the Shirley tomato I usually grow which is meant to give a bigger and better crop. So will see what happens!! Great to see the bulbs coming through as well, looking forward to seeing some colour in the garden after months of everything looking boring and miserable! Loved seeing the pictures of your sycamore tree, I’m sure it will grow to be magnificent for so many future generations to enjoy. There’s something nice in thinking this tiny little tree will one day be ginormous and will live for hundreds of years and be enjoyed loooooong after we’re gone.” Thomas Sara's Response: Thomas we have greenhouse envy! What wonderfully strong, healthy plantlets! π± Thank you for sharing. Onwards and upwards! "We are spending the day sorting our green shoot area. It was destroyed by two storms and a Saint Bernard looking for a drink. We do still have some green shoots. This will be our 3rd year trying. We are not born with this green skill but each year we do better than the last. So we try again. Because people who live with drug resistant epilepsy are stubborn and we will always keep trying. We have carrots, courgettes and strawberries coming through and chives that we use in meals." Marie "It's only now that the little colour punchers are beginning to fade. I have to take a photo of alliums too. Isabelle's dad, Toby, planted them in our allotment. I saw their shoots are coming up." We weren't born with complex medical needs parent skill. But we keep going keep trying. We Keep Calm & Keto On. We Keep Calm & Green Shoot On. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. " Hannah "So far I've planted, cosmos, dahlia, zinnia, aster, phlox, snap dragons, cucumbers, Ice plant, snake gourd, basil, parsley, coriander and cucamelons Bear helped fill pots and then emptied them on the patio but at least he hasn't been putting dirt in his mouth... Well at least so far. I took him for a walk today (he's got a special (tomato) buggy) and I asked which way he wanted to go, he directed me to my sisters house. He giggled when I asked if he was leading me to auntie Katie's. He's made of sweetness and mischief " Francesca "Finally all well enough to do our planting Thank you so much.
