Celebrating 2 Years of Keto! Two years ago, we took a leap of faith and started the ketogenic diet—a world where butter became a food group, extra thick double cream was eaten out of the tub like peanut butter, MCT oil flowed like (a very expensive) river and we added fat power to vegetable soup. Today, with hearts full of gratitude and a fridge full of leftover double cream and salami we made the decision to begin to wean Amelia off keto. Why now? For Amelia, keto + VNS + med adjustments brought us from 100+ seizures a day to seizure-free *weeks*—something we once only dreamed of. With her team, we’ve decided it’s time to transition slowly, while hopefully holding onto every bit of progress she’s made and letting VNS take over the heavy lifting. What keto gave us: 12 glorious seizure-free days in a row (a record we’ll forever cheer!). Plus many more seizure free days and seizure free weeks (just not seizure freedom) Fewer meds - we dropped one entirely and reduced two others. Proof that Amelia’s brain loves a good challenge (and that she’d sell her soul for a stolen bite of cookie). To everyone in Daisy's Keto Café who’s cheered us on, gave us advice, listened when I cried and pulled my hair out **thank you**. This diet was a wild ride, but it gave us back moments we’d lost to seizures. Now, onward—to whatever adventure (and maybe, just maybe, a slice of cake) comes next. Amelia is also on the waiting list now for cannabidiol. A few people have asked are we coming off because it didn't work? No, we’re not stopping because it “failed.”, No, but for Amelia puberty is not a friend of Keto and we have VNS now (and hopefully cannabidiol on the way) hopefully vns can take over and do the heavy lifting now and Amelia? She smashed it. Us too, as they wanted Amelia to be peg fed for it and we asked them to let us try orally. 2 years on from that conversation and we did it orally. We will be keeping things in our life The Daisy Garland, attempts at growing vegetables, mindfulness, surreal cereal, What the Hog, Curators, Stocked, cheesies and so many other options that are easier and healthier than refined carbs. How fitting that this decision—marking the close of one chapter and the start of another—was made on March 26th, the very day we’ll now remember as the beginning of Amelia’s next big adventure. We'll be sticking around as I've found a family here. Plus who knows keto may not be over yet, there may be a sequel, trilogy or a revolving door. Thank you most of all to The Daisy Garland.
